When Charles & Ray Eames conceived and created one of the icons of the word of design, their goal was to answer the need of their friend, the filmmaker Billy Wilder: “take a long nap without deforming his armchair”. To develop this project they were inspired by and American symbol, an old baseball glove, and a classic english club chair.
This armchair, designed by the couple in 1956, was their first object destined for large-scale commercialization. A hard work of research and innovation that lasted for years and that we can now enjoy thanks to Vitra.
Its manufacturing process includes forty- seven steps, and the materials that makeup the Lounge Chair & Ottoman are all sustainable, recycled or recyclable.
The Eames experimented for years until they achieved plywood casing, modeled in three dimensions and adapted to the shape of the human anatomy.
To get the uniform appearance of each piece, wood is selected from the same tree, which must have a sustainable certificate. Although its finish has a protective varnish, sun exposure over time, could alter the tone of your precious treasure.
For the upholstery, the leathers chosen must comply the environmental protection regulations and come from animals raised for meat production.
And why leather? It is a highly durable material and over time it acquires that natural color that makes each piece exclusive and unique. An upholstery symbol of elegance, longevity and removal covers.
The Lounge Chair & Ottoman, whose manufacturing process has remained intact since the 50s, could be enjoyed in two sizes: the classic and the contemporary, which answers to current standards and human scale.
