Description

La Chaise is a design presented by Charles & Ray Eames in the contest of the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1948, although it did not win because it was considered “too special to sit on”, we are talking about an icon of the organic design that has been part of MoMA´s permanent exhibition.

To appreciate the lines that make up this molded construction, worth looking at the sculpture that inspired it: “Floating figure” done by Gaston Lachaise, a bronze representation of a voluptuous nude woman, with sinuous and rounded limbs, that fit perfectly into this seat. In their design nothing is the result of chance, even the name pays homage to the sculptor.

In the 90s the piece entered production with Vitra which publishes as many works by Charles & Ray Eames.

It is made up of a polyurethane shell with a white lacquered finish, a chromed tubular steel base and a natural solid wood cross foot protected with varnish.

Materials that are common to us now, were at the time an innovation to which the Eames dedicated many years of research.

From the materials resulting from new technologies and Second World War, they choose to develop a compound based on plastic and rubber.

La Chaise, a “surprising, attractive an inventive” lounger.

Although Charles & Ray Eames calculated the production cost of this piece, around $27 at the time, they were not aware of the impact it would have on the world furniture design, and that they had created not just a functional seat, but a sculpture and timeless object, with which we can decorate our homes.
