Description

Charles & Ray Eames researched and experimented with three-dimensional molding of plywood for years.

The Eames Elephant, designed in 1946, for the couple was technically very complicated to execute and we already know that almost nothing could resist them. They did not get to edit it and only created a few prototypes, one for the Eames family, others for shows and exhibitions.

Presented at the MoMA in New York in 1946, the Eames Elephant shows Ray & Charles trajectory until they achieved their plywood casings, modeled in three dimensions and adapted to the shape of the human anatomy that we can enjoy, for example, in the Lounge Chair & Ottoman.

In 2007, to commemorate the centenary of the Eames, Vitra produced 2,000 limited and numbered edition pieces. It will not be until 2017 when the brand begins to produce the original cherry wood plywood version to which is added a model in gray ash, the Eames Elephant (Plywood).

Another model that has been on the market for some time is the one made of polypropylene tinted in a matt finish, available in seven colors and which reminds us the colorful shells of the Eames Plastic Chairs. There are two options, the original size or a smaller one. Both perfect as a toy for the little ones in the house and/or as a decorative element.

Virtually all the objects created by these referents in the world of design have been copied. The Eames Elephants edited by Vitra, in addition to being of high quality, have the brand’s label to ensure their authenticity.

Whether to decorate or play, the Eames Elephant is dedicated to fans of this intelligent and sensitive animal. If you want to complete the collection, also get the Elephant Pad and the Elephant Ring, mouse pad and key ring respectively, designed by Ella Jongerius by recycling leather scraps from Vitra furniture.
