The Panton Chair, an expressive and powerful design icon of the twentieth century. When Verner Panton created and presented this design in 1959, it caused a furor among the public, it was the chair of the “space age” of the 60s, the Pop Art.
The designer, with this sinuous S-shaped seat, realized the dream of Ludwing Mies Van der Rohe, a seat made of plastic and stackable mass-produced in 1976. But Verner Panton went further, making in one piece the backrest, seat and feet.
To get the current chair, exhibited in the most important museums, such as the MoMA in New York and the Design Museum in London, the architect Verner Panton (passionate about bright colors and geometric shapes) and the manufacturer Vitra, went through many phases of production.
He began to develop the chair by stacking cubes and creating the design in S. He made an initial model with cast plaster. Together with Vitra, they manufactured a model in cold-pressed polyester reinforced with fiberglass, which turned out to be very heavy, and they also tried it with thermoplastic polyester.
That is how they arrived at “Baydur”, a high-strength polyurethane foam produced by Bayer. In 1979 they stopped production as it was not durable and weakened.
It was in 1999, when it was published in polyurethane plastic, the Panton Chair was born, faithful to the original model, light and available in 7 colors matt finish, which can be used both indoor and outdoor.
This chair, cover of the most prestigious magazines and which has received countless awards, is perfect for any space and combines with any type of material. In addition, it adapts perfectly to both classic and contemporary spaces.
The seat and backrest height have been updated and are now three centimeters more than the original design. We have grown and the Panton Chair has grown too, both in dimensions and value.
